The fountain pen was developed earlier than the pencil. In 1922, Howard Carter found the first writing implement in Tutankhamun's tomb that resembled today's fountain pens. It was a reed tube sharpened on one side and placed in a copper holder with ink. Similar pens were found during excavations in the Bazar-daria valley in the Pamir.
